I was not happy with the performance of auto-sloping materials with tri-planar projections, and texture variations solutions that came with the engine, so I made my own!

Technique

For this optimized version of an auto-landscape material I created my own texture variation material function, the one packaged with Unreal samples the texture multiple times, AND it doesn’t break up the texture that well. There is a similar problem with the default tri-planar material function bundled with Unreal, made a custom one for this too. Each of these material functions sample the texture a single time, it minimizes the impact on performance, memory usage, and breaks repetition arguably better than what the engine comes up with, very lightweight and configurable for a custom solution.
